Something Felt Different About Mom This Weekend.
Signs Your Aging Parent May Need More Support
Maybe she wasn't walking as confidently as she used to.
Maybe she needed help getting up from her chair.
Maybe she sat out the family walk, seemed more tired than usual, or repeated the same story a few times.
Nothing dramatic happened.
But as you drove home, you couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed.
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
For many families, holiday gatherings are when they first notice subtle changes in an aging parent. It's not because something suddenly happened over the weekend, it's because spending several hours or days together makes it easier to notice things that can be missed during a quick phone call or short visit.
Common Signs Your Aging Parent May Need More Support
You may have noticed:
- Moving more slowly or needing help with balance.
- Difficulty keeping up during a family walk or activity.
- Unexplained weight loss or decreased appetite.
- Increased forgetfulness or repeating the same stories.
- The house isn't being maintained the way it once was.
- Difficulty managing medications or appointments.
- Needing more help than they're willing to admit.
None of these changes automatically mean it's time for assisted living.
But they are worth paying attention to.
Don't Panic, Start with a Conversation
One of the biggest mistakes families make is feeling like they have to solve everything immediately.
You don't.
Instead, start with a conversation. Ask how your parent has been feeling. Listen more than you talk. You may learn there's a simple explanation or you may discover they've been struggling more than they wanted anyone to know.
Most older adults value their independence. The goal isn't to take that away. The goal is to find ways to help them stay safe while preserving as much independence as possible.
You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone
Many families tell me they aren't even sure what questions to ask.
That's completely normal.
Sometimes the next step isn't moving to a senior living community. Sometimes it's learning about available resources, exploring home care, making a few safety improvements around the house, or simply creating a plan for the future.
Every family is different, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.
