What Questions Should You Ask When Touring Assisted Living?

Touring senior living communities is one of the most important steps in the decision-making process—but many families aren’t sure what they should actually be asking.

Asking the right questions can help you look beyond appearances and truly understand the level of care, communication, and support a community provides.

Care & Support

Start by understanding how care is delivered:

  • How are care needs assessed initially?
  • How often are care plans updated?
  • What happens if needs change?

Staffing & Communication

  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio?
  • How are families kept informed?
  • Who is the main point of contact?

Cost & Services

  • What is included in the base rate?
  • What services cost extra?
  • How are increases handled over time?

Daily Life

  • What does a typical day look like?
  • How are residents engaged?
  • Are activities optional or encouraged?

Final Thoughts

The right questions can make all the difference in finding the right fit.

If you’re not sure where to start, I’m always happy to help guide families through this process and attend tours together.
